History
The story of the building in time
1938
Kivimäe Military Sanatorium
The Kivimäe military sanatorium was opened in October. The two-storey stone building, designed by military architect Alfred Kehva, had 60 treatment beds: half for officers and half for non-commissioned officers and soldiers. The rooms for treating tuberculosis patients were for one to four people.
Festive opening in Nõmme
At the opening ceremony of the sanatorium, Major General Hans Järvan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Johan Laidoner, President Konstantin Päts, Prime Minister Kaarel Eenpalu and Minister of War Major General Paul Lill sat in the front row. Behind them stood the head of the sanatorium, Dr. Herbert Hold, and the coordinator, Dr. Aleksander Kõiv.
1940
The activities of the Estonian military sanatorium ended after the Soviet occupation. The sanatorium managed to operate in its original form for less than two years.
1940–1991
During the Soviet era, the building was used for several purposes. The building housed the tuberculosis department of the military hospital, the Baltic Fleet dispatch station and the military fuel storage facility. Later, the property was also used by various communications institutions, including the Communications Construction of the Ministry of Communications of the ESSR, the Harju District Communications Node, and the Harju County Telephone Network.
1991–2005
After Estonia regained its independence, the property remained connected to communications companies. By 2005, it belonged to Elion, which declared the property unnecessary for its activities and put it up for sale.
2005–2012
The former sanatorium building was left empty and its condition deteriorated. The former medical institution was waiting for a new use, which would allow the preservation of the historic building.
2012–2020
Planning for the new use of the property began. After a long procedure, a detailed plan was established in 2020, which provided for the reconstruction of the former sanatorium into a residential building with up to 12 apartments.
2026–2028
By 2026, the Kivimäe Süda development will be taken over by the Estonian real estate company Develora OÜ. The company's goal is to completely demolish the old building and build a new building with the same historical appearance and architectural character in its place, using modern technologies and high-quality materials.
